Maleficent - The Dark Fairy

Maleficent: Forces of Darkness (Original title: Maleficent: Mistress of Evil ) is an American fantasy film by Walt Disney Pictures , which was released in October 2019. Like its predecessor, Maleficent - The Dark Fairy (2014), the film uses characters from the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty .

action

In the five years since King Stefan's death, Aurora ruled as Queen of the Moors and Maleficent as guardian and protector. Despite their service, the neighboring kingdom of Ulstead, home of Prince Phillip, considers Maleficent a villain, and while Philip's father, King John, wishes peace, his mother, Queen Ingrith, has been secretly preparing for war. In the castle's hidden areas, workers make weapons and ammunition from iron that are deadly to all fairies. Diaval, Maleficent's raven and confidante, overhears Phillip Aurora proposing marriage. When he relayed this to Maleficent, she advises against marriage, but Aurora insists that her reservations will prove false.

Philip's parents throw an intimate dinner to which they have invited Aurora, Maleficent, and Diaval. Maleficent maintains her composure while Ingrith mocks her throughout the evening by repeating the imprecise story that led people to believe she was evil: the story of Maleficent's dormant curse on Aurora is only half the story because no one ever learned the whole truth about her love for Aurora and willingness to sacrifice herself to lift the curse. Ingrith alludes to Stefan's death as murder, openly claiming that Maleficent killed two human poachers who were last seen near the moors. Maleficent responds with the same coldness that humans have abducted fairies, implying that she believes the order to do so comes from the king or queen.

When Ingrith dismisses Maleficent's maternal bond with Aurora and claims that marriage will make Ingrith her real mother, Maleficent responds by furiously unleashing a burst of magical energy. John suddenly falls unconscious and Ingrith screams that Maleficent has cursed him. Maleficent denies cursing him, but Aurora doesn't believe her. Phillip tells his mother to wake John up with a kiss. Ingrith refuses and her weak attempt fails because she does not love her husband.

When Maleficent flees the castle, Ingrith's right hand, Gerda, shoots Maleficent with an iron bullet. Wounded, Maleficent falls into the ocean only to be rescued by a mysterious winged creature. She wakes up in a cave where fairies like her are hiding. Among them are Conall, their peaceful leader who saved Maleficent, and Borra, a warlike fairy who preferred open conflict with humans and killed the poachers near the moors. Maleficent is among the last of the creatures known as the dark phoenix fairies, powerful fairies who are forced to hide and have become almost extinct from human oppression. She herself is also the last descendant of the phoenix, an ancient and powerful ancestor of the dark fairies. Because Maleficent's magic is so powerful, Conall and Borra believe it will help end conflict with humans through either peace or war.

Meanwhile, the magical inhabitants of the moors are invited to the royal wedding, but Aurora is growing disillusioned with her life as an Ulstead noblewoman. Conall later sacrifices himself to rescue Maleficent during a human attack on the Dark Fairies and causes Borra to declare war on the humans. Aurora discovers that Ingrith cursed John with Maleficent's old cursed spindle for hating all the bog fairy people. When Ingrith learns that Aurora knows the truth, she reveals that she bitterly grudges the prosperity of the moors at a time when her kingdom has suffered, and also blames her for her brother's death. She plans to exterminate all fairies and forest creatures with the iron weapons, as well as a deadly purple powder developed by Lickspittle, a devout elf. When the moor dwellers arrive, they are locked in the castle chapel.

On Ingrith's orders, Gerda releases the deadly purple powder by playing the chapel's organ. The fairy Flittle selflessly sacrifices herself to save everyone by clogging the organ and making the organ unplayable, while her friends Knotgrass and Thistlewit Gerda plunge to their deaths. The Dark Fairies launch an attack on Ulstead, but the palace soldiers begin massacring them until Maleficent, channeling their phoenix power, joins the battle. She almost kills Ingrith, but Aurora appeals to Maleficent's humanity to spare her and explains that Maleficent is her only mother. With Maleficent distracted, Ingrith fires her crossbow. Maleficent saves Aurora, but is hit by the arrow and disappears into ashes. Devastated, Aurora mourns Maleficent, but after Aurora's tears fall into the ashes, Maleficent is reborn as a phoenix.

Horrified and angry, Ingrith throws Aurora from the tower to kill her and tells Maleficent to rescue her again. Phillip makes peace between the fairies and the humans, and the Ulstead soldiers step back. Maleficent returns to her fairy form and finally gives her blessings to Aurora and Phillip when she realizes they belong together. Lickspittle decides to stop following Ingrith's instructions and gives Maleficent the spindle that cursed John and, previously, Aurora. Maleficent destroys the spindle and its curse and wakes John from his sleep. On her escape, Ingrith is stopped and captured by Borra and the other dark fairies. As punishment for her crimes, Maleficent turns her into a goat until she can accept peace between the two peoples.

After Aurora and Philip get married, Maleficent returns to the moor with the other Dark Fairies and teaches the young fairies to fly. She promises to return when there is a "baptism" for Aurora and Philip's future child.
