action

Young Ella lost her mother at an early age and from then on lived with her father, a wholesale merchant, in good circumstances. Since she desperately wants her father to be happy again, she welcomes his new wife Lady Tremaine and their daughters Anastasia and Drizella to the family. But as soon as Ella's father dies completely unexpectedly during a business trip, Lady Tremaine shows her true colors. From this day on, Ella lives as a maid in the house and is only called Cinderella.

One day she meets the young, handsome Kit without realizing that it is the prince. She falls in love with him and hopes to have found a soul mate and to get the chance for a better life.

Since, according to his doctor, the king will not live very long, the king decides to organize a ball so that his son can finally get married. The Grand Duke, the loyal servant of the king, wants to use this to secure more power in the kingdom. When the invitation from the royal family to a ball comes, Ella wants to accept it, but her stepmother forbids it and also destroys Ella's dress. Ella comes to the aid of a good fairy who conjures up a carriage, servants and suitable clothing for the ball. When the prince sees Ella there, he is the first to ask her to dance, which is a thorn in the side of the grand duke, who had organized another woman for the prince. Ella and the prince spend the evening together until Ella escapes at midnight, because after that the fairy's magic will no longer work. However, she loses one of her glass shoes, which Kit uses to find her.

After the king dies and Kit becomes the new king, the message is shouted that the woman who owns the glass shoe is wanted. But to Ella's horror, her stepmother finds the other shoe she was able to keep and destroys it. Lady Tremaine informs the Grand Duke about Ella and concludes a pact with him, according to which she keeps Ella hidden and she becomes a baroness and her daughters get advantageous marriages.

When the royal guard, led by the Grand Duke and the captain, arrives at the property, Anastasia and Drizella are asked to try on the shoe. After this does not fit either of the two daughters, the royal guard wants to leave. However, before they leave, Ella's singing makes everyone aware of the imprisoned girl. The king reveals his camouflage (as a common soldier), lets Cinderella try on the shoe, and after the shoe fits her, he takes her to his castle.

Shortly thereafter, the Grand Duke, Lady Tremaine and their daughters leave the kingdom forever. Ella and Kit get married and become the fairest and kindest royal couple.

production

History of origin

After the overwhelming box office hit of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland from 2010, with revenues of over $ 1 billion, Walt Disney Pictures began developing a live action version of Cinderella . The script was written by Aline Brosh McKenna and the film was to be produced by Simon Kinberg . In August 2010, Mark Romanek was hired for the post of director. After the project had stood still for almost two years, Chris Weitz was commissioned to revise the script in February 2012 . In January 2013, there were creative differences between Walt Disney Pictures and Romanek, as Romanek wanted to stage the film much darker than the production company planned. Because of this, Romanek left the film and was replaced by Kenneth Branagh in late January 2013.

Differences between the original and the live version

The remake contains many storylines and elements from the original from 1950. But a lot has also been added.

  • In the real-life film, Ella and the prince meet by chance during a hunt. In the original, they meet for the first time at the ball. In the Czechoslovak film " Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella " from the 1970s it is similar. Ella can also ride there and saves animals from being hunted by the royal society.
  • The wicked stepmother Lady Tremaine is a beautiful middle-aged woman with red hair , while in the cartoon she is shown older and has gray, dark hair.
  • The animals play a much more important role in the original than in the remake, and the mice can't talk. Furthermore, the mouse Jaqueline in the cartoon was male and was called Jaques .
  • In this version, the Grand Duke is, unlike in the original, an antagonist who makes common cause with Lady Tremaine.
  • In the real version, the king dies, while in the original he stays alive.
  • With the figure of the captain, a new character was added.
  • The history of Cinderella is treated more precisely in this film than in the original. In addition, she and the two step-sisters are much older when their parents married than in the cartoon.
  • Unlike the original, the film does not contain any vocal parts. Only the songs Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo der Guten Fee, sung by Helena Bonham Carter and A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes , sung by the leading actress Lily James , can be heard in the credits.

Easter Egg

There is an Insider Easter Egg in the film : in the Prince's "Secret Garden", Cinderella takes a seat on a swing and loses one of her glass shoes. This is an obvious reference to the painting The Swing by Jean-Honoré Fragonard , one of the declared favorites of the Disney Animation Studios team that u. a. also starred in the Disney animated film Frozen .

reception

Cinderella received mostly positive reviews. On Metacritic , the film received a Metascore of 67/100 based on 47 reviews, and on Rotten Tomatoes , 85 percent of 194 reviews were positive.

Benjamin Moldenhauer from Spiegel Online says about the film: “The British director does as much rambazamba in his fairy tale film as he has not done since his disinhibited 'Frankenstein' film adaptation in 1994. The rooms overflow with decor, nature overwhelms, the colors are too strong to pass as natural. "Antje Wessels from Cinefacts .de says:" With the help of new perspectives, a detailed introduction to the extremely dramatic living conditions of all the main characters and With a more pronounced profile of the stepmother, who was previously characterized as simply evil, the director of 'Thor' gets a lot out of the template and thus proves that it doesn't take a complete overhaul to bring the dusty genre of fairy tales back into modern blockbuster cinema. "

The film grossed over 539 million US dollars worldwide, of which nearly 200 million came from the USA and Canada.

Awards (selection)

The film was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Costume Design in 2016 . In 2016 the production received the Saturn Award for best fantasy film . There were other nominations and awards.
