Artemis Fowl is an American adventure film directed by Kenneth Branagh and a real-life adaptation of the novel series Artemis Fowl directed by Eoin Colfer . In the summer of 2013, it was announced that Walt Disney Studios was planning a live adaptation of the novel series Artemis Fowl . While it had been speculated for years that the film would combine the stories from the first two Artemis Fowl novels, Eoin Colfer later stated in a video interview that the film would only focus on the events of the first Artemis Fowl novel will.

Directed by Kenneth Branagh , who also produced the film with Judy Hofflund . Conor McPherson wrote the script together with Michael Goldenberg , who in this capacity has already been responsible for films such as Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix .

Cast and filming

In September 2017, Judi Dench became the first actress to be engaged for the film. She will play Commander Root in the film, the head of the reconnaissance unit for the Central Underground Police. After over 1,200 candidates had come to the casting for the eponymous leading role, the young actor Ferdia Shaw was finally given the leading role of Artemis Fowl II. In this role Shaw makes his acting debut. Nonso Anozie took on the role of his bodyguard butler. Josh Gad will play Mulch Diggums, a kleptomaniac dwarf. The role of Captain Holly Short was cast with the child actress Lara McDonnell .

Filming began at Longcross Studios in February 2018 and has taken place in England, Northern Ireland and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. At the beginning of June 2018, the film was shot on the rocky coast near the small town of Portrush between the nearby Royal Court Hotel and Dunluce Castle , which is one of the largest ruins of a medieval castle in Ireland. Filming in the UK ended in mid-June 2018.

Film music and publication

The score was composed by Patrick Doyle . The soundtrack album with a total of 28 tracks was released on June 12, 2020 by Walt Disney Records as a download.

At the end of November 2018, Disney presented a first teaser trailer. This was underlaid with spherical music from Decks Dark by Radiohead . The film was originally scheduled to hit US cinemas on August 9, 2019, and German cinemas on October 3, 2019. The US theatrical release was later postponed to May 29 and the German release date to June 11, 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic , it was decided to publish the film directly on the Disney + streaming service . There he appeared on June 12, 2020 in various countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. A publication in Germany is planned for August 14, 2020.

So far, the film has only won over 9 percent of all 139 reviews evaluated by Rotten Tomatoes and received an average rating of 3.6 out of a possible 10 points. This makes it the worst-rated original production ever released on Disney +.
