Hamlet (alternative title: William Shakespeare's Hamlet ) is a literary film adaptation by Kenneth Branagh from 1996 and is based on the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare . It is a very complex production with a top-class cast. In contrast to other literary adaptations, the original dialogues from Shakespeare were used here in full. Branagh fashionably moved the action to the 19th century.
Production costs were over $ 18 million, but the film grossed only $ 4.7 million.

Awards (selection)
The film was at the Academy Awards 1997 in four categories for the Oscar nominated Production Design, Costume Design, Music (Original Dramatic Score) and Adapted Screenplay, but could not win any prizes.
Kate Winslet won the Empire Award for Best British Actress in 1998 for her performance .
Reviews
The lexicon of international film judged that the production had "no uniform staging style". “[T] he excellent acting achievements” would not allow boredom to arise despite “obvious inconsistencies and weaknesses”.
