occupation

All Is True is a British film directed by Kenneth Branagh from the year 2018 . It fictionally treats the last years of William Shakespeare's life in his hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon with his family. Here a dark secret is revealed.

action

After his Globe Theater burned down in London on June 29, 1613 , William Shakespeare returns to live with his family in his hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon. The return is overshadowed by the memory of the early death of his only son Hamnet , who died of the plague in 1596 at the age of eleven . In his memory and in order to cope with his grief, Shakespeare laid out a garden, to which he dedicates himself daily. His wife accuses him of not looking after the family in all the years he spent as a successful playwright and actor in London and criticizes his late grief. His daughter Judith, Hamnet's twin sister, is also in opposition to her famous but always absent father. In addition, a marriage scandal shakes the small town of Stratford, in which his older, unhappily married daughter Susanna is involved.

Shakespeare saw in his son a worthy successor and master of the word. This is evidently borne out by Hamnet's verses, which he always proudly presented to his father. However, it now turns out that Judith is the author of the verses who wanted to relieve her beloved twin brother from the pressures of the father's expectations. Believing that her father would not appreciate poems by a girl, even if it was his daughter, she wrote in the place of her brother, thus increasing Shakespeare's expectations of his son.

When Shakespeare, while looking through the church records, discovers that his son was the only one to have died of the plague at the time - absolutely unusual for a plague outbreak - he confronts his family with the discovery. While his wife insists on killing the plague, Judith collapses and confesses that in anger she threatened Hamnet with telling her father who really wrote all the verses. In desperation to stand before his father as a failure and to have deeply disappointed him, Hamnet drowned himself in a pond.

Shakespeare spends a night at the pond in sadness and shame, catches a bad cold and dies some time later with his now reconciled family.

production

On October 30, 2018, Sony Pictures Classics announced that it would be releasing a film that Kenneth Branagh had already made without causing a stir. The short set All Is True was the alternative title of Shakespeare's Henry VIII until it was published in First Folio 1623 .

The film was shot in and around the Dorney Court , a historic mansion in Buckinghamshire from the Tudor period . A popular location for other British films as well. A special feature of the film is the evening illumination of the interior shots almost exclusively with candlelight.

reception

On Rotten Tomatoes , the film received a rating of 73%, based on 93 reviews, with an average rating of 6.58 out of 10. The overall review is: “Impressive cast and beautifully staged. All Is True takes an elegant look at Shakespeare's last days ”. On Metacritic , the film received an average rating of 60 to 100 based on 27 reviews.

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian describes All Is True as sentimental, theatrical, personable - and unfashionable and believes it is a cheeky background story to Shakespeare's famous legacy to his wife, the "second best bed".

Elizabeth Weitzman of The Wrap , a US media website, believes that Branagh, in his dual roles as director and lead actor, is falling short of his potential as a Shakespearean film expert. His ambition is honorable, but without substance he is only the shadow of a dream.

In Germany, the film was first released in German on September 26, 2019 on DVD and Blu-ray .
