Anne Hathaway (* 1556 - August 6, 1623 in Stratford-upon-Avon , Warwickshire ) was an English woman and the wife of William Shakespeare . At the age of 18, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, eight years his senior. Their first child was baptized on May 26, 1583, six months after the marriage. They had three children in total. Anne Hathaway is known to be the daughter of a freeman and that she outlived her husband by seven years.

The wedding question

The following are the facts: A Worcester document shows an entry in the episcopal register on November 27, 1582, in which the bridegroom ( Wm. Shaxpere ) married an "Annam [ Anne / Annes / Agnes ] Whateley" of Temple Grafton. A document dated November 28th specified that a "William Shagspere" and an "Anne Hathwey of Stratford" celebrated their marriage with the consent of the bride. The difference between the bride's names on two consecutive days was assessed very differently, interpreted by Shakespeare specialist Honigmann as an error, and by Mark Eccles as a "church error". Frederick Pohl takes the more extreme position that an Anne Whateley of Temple Grafton could never be proven and never existed. Burgess believes there were both women Shakespeare loved Anne Whateley, but Anne Hathaway insisted on getting married because of her pregnancy.
