The men reveal their feelings at a ball; the women, however, ask for proofs of love in that the men wait for them for a year.

Reviews

Derek Elley wrote in Variety magazine on February 16, 2000 that the film was a "delightful" treatise on "old Hollywood-style" love . The film was without precedent - the 1990s had brought some modernized adaptations of Shakespeare, but none was stylized like a traditional musical. Branagh tried to appeal to modern audiences by cutting down the dialogue and simplifying the plot.

Film-Dienst wrote that the film renounced “the contemporary allusions” and raised “the piece to the rank of an elegant musical through the use of many song and dance numbers” , which underlined “the timelessness of the love story” .

Cinema magazine compared the “wonderful film” to an “explosive Broadway musical” . He interweaves “songs by Porter , Gershwin and Berlin with the original text” .

In the review of the Berliner Zeitung on May 25th, 2000, however, it was said: "" Lost love effort "is completely devoid of meaning, which is why the film cannot achieve anything more than successful situation comedy in its best moments."

Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of Shakespeare's comedy was also criticized in the film review of the Stuttgarter Nachrichten : "'Lost love effort' is nothing more than a helpless attempt to revive the music film genre."

Awards

Adrian Lester was nominated for the British Independent Film Award in 2000. The film was nominated for a Golden Reel Award in 2001 for sound editing .
