Emily Kathleen A. Mortimer (born December 1, 1971 in London ) is a British - American actress , screenwriter and film producer .

life and career

The daughter of Sir John Mortimer (1923-2009) and Penelope Gollop attended St. Paul's Girls School in the London borough of Barnes and studied English and Russian at Lincoln College in Oxford from 1990 to 1994 . She played in plays at the girls' boarding school and continued to do so in college.

In 2004, Mortimer played a mother in the film Dear Frankie , who is torn between worrying about her son and hoping for a normal life. The role earned her a 2005 nomination for the London Critics' Circle Film Award and for the European Film Awards (in the Audience Award category). In 2007 she was nominated for the Satellite Award for her role in the comedy Lars and the Women .

Since January 3, 2003, Mortimer has been married to his fellow actor Alessandro Nivola . Their son was born on September 26, 2003 and their daughter on January 15, 2010. In 2010, she received United States citizenship in addition to her British citizenship.
