James Berardinelli compared the film on ReelViews with GoldenEye , with which he could not really compete. The title character is very different from the main character of the television series of the 1960s, which would have served as the inspiration for the film. The end is disappointing. Berardinelli praised the "wonderful" performance by Elisabeth Shue.

The lexicon of international films said: “An exciting action thriller staged with a great deal of technology and equipment on the basis of a series of novels and television ('Simon Templar') with a main character that is psychologically sound for the first time. The image of Russia, however, still corresponds very much to that of the Cold War, and the continuation of the plot up to averting a coup leads the otherwise straightforward and solid development of history to absurd heights. "
