action

Nick Parker is a Vietnam veteran who lost his sight in the war . In the jungle, he completed a tough training session with locals that sharpened his remaining senses and made him the perfect swordsman. After returning to the United States, he sets out to visit Frank Deveraux, his former war comrade. When Nick comes to Frank's previous address, only his ex-wife Lynn and their son Billy are present. While Nick is talking to Lynn, three men appear who pretend to be cops and really want to talk to Billy. Things get out of hand and Slag, the leader of the three, shoots Lynn. Nick can kill the supposed police officers and put Slag to flight, because a sword with a razor-sharp blade is hidden in his white cane . Before Lynn dies, she asks Nick to bring her son to Frank, Reno, Nevada .

Frank, who wanted to go back to his old job as a chemist, has gambling debts with an unscrupulous casino owner named MacCready. In order to eradicate this, MacCready asks Frank to manufacture synthetic drugs, and to make sure that Frank does not try to escape, his three henchmen should kidnap Billy so that he can be used as leverage.

On the way to Reno, Nick and Billy are followed by MacCready's people and Slag. Nick is able to prevent Billy from being kidnapped again and finally reaches Reno. There they come into contact with Frank's girlfriend Annie. She helps them and temporarily places Billy with a friend while Nick visits MacCready's casino. Nick creates a lot of confusion in the casino by exposing the roulette table to be manipulable. In the subsequent tumult of casino guests, Nick manages to enter Frank's laboratory unnoticed and to flee with him. Before that, Frank takes a sample of the synthetic drugs and sets the laboratory on fire. After leaving the casino and arriving at Annie's friend, all they find is her body. Billy and Annie have been kidnapped by Slag.

MacCready calls and demands that the drugs be exchanged for Billy and Annie's lives. In a mountain house there is a showdown in which Nick, with Frank's help, kills almost all of MacCready's people. MacCready then threatens to kill Billy if he doesn't get the drugs right away. Frank has no choice but to hand over the drugs. MacCready places a Japanese swordsman on Nick, whom Nick can only defeat with great difficulty. Slag then intervenes and wounds Nick with his pistol . In response, Nick throws his stick sword at Slag and pegs it to the wall. While Frank MacCready is overwhelmed, Nick grabs the sword of the Japanese, with which he can finally deal the fatal blow to Slag.

At the end of the film, the protagonists part ways. Frank begins a new life with Billy and Annie and Nick walks along the highway, as he did at the beginning of the film.

Reviews

“Partly furiously staged mixture of action film, melodrama and road movie, but subliminally a questionable ideological reappraisal of the American trauma of Vietnam. In the second half the suspense breaks off in a hectic sequence of "show downs" and ends in the schemes of the Avenger film. "

"Phillip Noyce (" The Bone Hunter ") shot original action with precise characters. The main character is based on the Japanese legend of the blind samurai Zatoichi . "
