Randall Craig "Tex" Cobb (born May 7, 1950 in Bridge City , Texas ) is an American boxer and actor .

Life

Cobb grew up in Abilene , where he attended high school and university . At the age of 19 he dropped out of school and began a career as a boxer. He moved to Philadelphia and trained at a boxing school run by Joe Frazier . At first he fought successfully as a kickboxer , then he switched to boxing. In 1977 he had his first professional fight, which he won against Pedro Vega by TKO . His next 13 fights he won each by knockout , against Roy Wallace he won on points. After further victories, including against Earnie Shavers , he joined in November 1982 in Houston in the title fight against Larry Holmes , the reigning heavyweight world champion of the WBC . The fight went over the full distance of 15 rounds and went clearly to Holmes on points. In 1984 he was defeated by James "Buster" Douglas . Cobb faced Michael Dokes twice (1981 and 1985) , but lost both fights. In 1988 Cobb ended his career after beating Leon Spinks . In 1992 he had a short comeback, after ten fights he resigned from boxing a second time.

Cobb's acting career began in 1979 in the Oscar- nominated film The Champ, starring Jon Voight and Faye Dunaway , in which he had a small role as a boxer. From the 1980s onwards, he had guest roles on various television series such as Miami Vice , MacGyver and A Terribly Nice Family . He also had supporting roles in many successful feature film productions, including the comedies In Search of the Golden Child with Eddie Murphy , the fourth part of the Police Academy film series, and The Naked Cannon 33⅓ . He also appeared in two Jim Carrey comedies in the mid-1990s .

In 2008, Cobb graduated from university at the age of 57. He received a bachelor's degree in sports from Temple University, Philadelphia , his adopted home .
