action

Chandler Jarrell tracks down missing children for the youth welfare office. The boy can e.g. B. bring the dead back to life through touch and control the will of people. Jarrell and Kee Nang visit an oracle at the beginning to learn more.

While searching, the two come across Sardo Numspa's opponents, who want to kill the child. To do this, however, they need the so-called Ajanti dagger , which Chandler is supposed to bring them in exchange for the child. The kidnappers of the Golden Child try to break its magical power by giving him porridge mixed with blood to eat; the boy can defend himself against it. Only the dagger can kill the child and bring evil to power. Chandler and his partner have to find the cult item and take it back before it falls into the hands of the criminals.

Chandler can get the dagger in Nepal and falls in love with Kee Nang during the mission. However, she is killed in a fight with Sardo Numspa after returning. Only the golden child, who possesses supernatural powers, can bring them back to life before sunset. Chandler finds the child, kills Sardo Numspa with the help of the dagger and Kee Nang can be brought back to life.

Reviews

Paul Attanasio wrote in the Washington Post that the comedy was half-baked and had no heart. One of the problems is that the film is tailored to Murphy. Michael Ritchie does not belong to the same class as the directors Murphy used to work with.

The lexicon of international films said: “Fantasy film based on familiar set pieces, which tries to ironize the genre with brisk but by no means always successful quotes by comedian Eddie Murphy; conventional entertainment with some amusing variations. "

Awards

In 1987 the film was nominated for the Saturn Award as “best fantasy film” . JL Reate was nominated for the Young Artist Award in 1988 .

Remarks

The film, shot in California and Nepal, grossed approximately $ 79.8 million at the US box office. The dagger was not the same prop as in the movie Shadow and the Curse of Khan , but both are based on the actually existing ceremonial daggers called phurba .
