Shadow and the Curse of Khan (1994) is an American action film based on the radio and comic series The Shadow . The main roles are played by Alec Baldwin and Penelope Ann Miller . In Germany, the film opened in cinemas on October 27, 1994.

action

Lamont Cranston is an outwardly rich, life bored New York playboy. In the depths of the night, however, he becomes Shadow , the masked avenger with supernatural abilities. A Tibetan tulku led him to this life after he made the world unsafe for many years as a bloodthirsty drug tyrant Ying Ko. From him he learned to manipulate the minds of others and to use the fear in people's hearts for his own ends.

Now another student of Tulku has come to New York: Shiwan Khan, the last descendant of the Mongol emperor Genghis Khan , plundered the monastery in Tibet and stole the living dagger Phurba , which Shadow has always feared. Equipped with just as powerful telepathic powers as the nocturnal avenger, he wants to get the scientist Reinhardt Lane to build him a powerful weapon in the metropolis: a beryllium ball with special explosive charges, better known as the atomic bomb .

Doctor Lane's daughter Margo, who is dating Cranston, discovers that her father has been kidnapped. She asks her new admirer for help, whereupon Shadow takes action. The first duel with Khan, however, is almost a disaster, he is overwhelmed with the strength of his opponent. He sends Margo out via hypnosis to kill Shadow . When Cranston can fend off and wake her up, she realizes that she has come to him , and that therefore he must be Shadow . Cranston, in turn, finds that his ability to manipulate the minds of others is ineffective on her.

The two discover that Shiwan Khan is using the Hotel Monolith as the base for his operations; he telepathically concealed the colossal splendid building from everyone's eyes and with the help of Dr. Lane's assistant Farley Claymore hides in the building. Shadow and Margo penetrate, and while she rescues her father, the lone avenger first confronts Claymore and then Shiwan and the dreaded magic dagger. At first it seems like the bestial weapon will finally defeat him, but then he can overcome his fear and turn the Mongol's magical powers against him. Shiwan Khan loses his telepathic skills when a piece of glass hits his head, and Doctor Lane is able to deactivate his bomb at the last minute.

In the end, Lamont and Margo are happy together, but in the night he continues to turn to the dark side of life and fights evil as Shadow .

production

The film had a production cost of $ 45 million, making it the most expensive Shadow adaptation to date . Sam Raimi originally intended to direct, but was turned down in favor of Russell Mulcahy.

Another film adaptation

A remake was planned in the mid-2000s . As with the first filming, Sam Raimi was offered the direction. He gave up the project after a good script was not written. In 2010 there were rumors that Quentin Tarantino would take over the film, but these turned out to be baseless.

Reviews

“Another film adaptation of an American trivial myth, which, despite the technical effort, lacks speed and directorial wit. The well-known actors in this spectacle sell well below their price. "

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.
