Samuel Marshall "Sam" Raimi (born October 23, 1959 in Royal Oak , Michigan ) is an American director , film producer , screenwriter and actor .

His best-known works are the Dance of the Devils and the Spider-Man films.

Career

Raimi was born in Royal Oak and grew up in a Jewish family in Birmingham . His parents are of Russian-Jewish and Hungarian-Jewish origin. The original family name "Reingewertz" became "Raimi" when his grandfather emigrated to the United States.

Raimi is the fourth of five children. He often works on film projects together with his older brother Ivan and his younger Ted Raimi . His older sister Andrea Raimi Rubin is a lawyer. His eldest brother Sander died in a swimming accident in Israel in 1968 at the age of 15.

Raimi broke off studying English literature at Michigan State University in East Lansing after three semesters in order to make his debut feature film, Tanz der Teufel .

Raimi's father-in-law was Lorne Greene , whose daughter he married Gillian in 1993. The two have four children together: Lorne Daniel Raimi (* March 22, 1994), Henry Raimi (* 1996), Emma Rose Raimi (* 1999) and Dashiell William Schooley Raimi (* December 11, 2003). Emma, Lorne and Henry took on small roles in Spider-Man 3 and Drag Me to Hell .

In 1979 he founded the production company Renaissance Pictures together with producer Robert Tapert and B-movie actor Bruce Campbell . He often casts his long-time friend Bruce Campbell in leading or supporting roles in his films. Raimi co-wrote the 1985 screenplay with the Ethan and Joel Coen brothers for the black-humored comedy Crimewave - The Killer Academy , a bizarre story about a death row inmate in which Bruce Campbell both played a supporting role and was a producer. At the box office, however, the slapstick film turned out to be a flop.

On behalf of Legendary Pictures' Blizzard Entertainments , Raimi was hired to direct the Warcraft film, but in March 2013 he announced that he was no longer involved in the project. Raimi will be executive producer on the remakes of Poltergeist and Tanz der Teufel . In May 2012, he and his company Renaissance Pictures sued the Independent Film Company Award Pictures for their plan to direct a fourth part of The Evil Dead .

In 2015 he developed the television series Ash vs. Evil Dead based on the Evil Dead trilogy.

Together with Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck and with the support of the Chinese Beijing Cultural Investment Holding , Raimi founded the production company Allegory Films in 2016 , through which films with a budget of between 30 and 80 million dollars will be produced in the future.

One of his trademarks in many of his films is a yellow Oldsmobile Delta 88 from 1973 ("The Classic"), even disguised as a covered wagon in his western Faster than Death from 1995. A bottle of Maker's Mark Whiskey can also be seen regularly .

The "Shakycam" method, invented by Raimi and used for the first time in Tanz der Teufel, helped shape the style. A camera was strapped to a board, which was then carried through the forest by two people at the ends, thus enabling the most unusual camera perspectives. When directing, he - like Alfred Hitchcock - always wears a suit on set.

Sam Raimi shot the video clip for the song Cold Metal for the American punk rock singer Iggy Pop , which is on the Iggy pop album Instinct from 1988.
