Maniac Cop is an American horror film directed by William Lustig in 1988.
action
A waitress leaves a bar to head home in New York by night . Suddenly two guys lie in wait for her who want to relieve her of the contents of her handbag. She can tear herself away and flee to a nearby park while the two thugs are hot on her heels. At the last moment the woman recognizes the silhouette of a police officer. But before she can think she is safe, the law enforcement officer grabs her throat and crushes her neck ... the maniac cop is on his way!
It quickly becomes clear that the killer is to be looked for in the ranks of the police, as there are witnesses for the brutal act and further rumors about a crazy cop are making the rounds. The main suspicion is directed against the young officer Jack Forrest - after all, his wife was found with her throat cut shortly after she caught him in an affair. Forrest is temporarily withdrawn from circulation, while the real killer continues his bloody patrol duty unrecognized. Only Lieutenant McCrae is sure that an innocent man has been accused of serial murders and finally discovers a hot lead that leads him to his long-time colleague Sally Noland. A few years ago she had a relationship with Matt Cordell, a police officer who was arrested by corrupt politicians and who was murdered by fellow inmates in prison. A conversation with coroner Dr. Gruber finally brings the truth to light: Cordell was not killed at all, only seriously injured and suffered irreparable brain damage.
There is a fatal confrontation between Cordell and McCrae before the latter can pass on the new knowledge. To prove his innocence, Jack must now take the arrest of the killer into his own hands. The pursuit of Cordell ends in the harbor basin of the city - the maniac cop apparently drowns when he sinks into the murky water with a stolen money transporter. But when the vehicle is recovered a little later, there is no trace of the madman to be found.
criticism
Kabel 1 Filmlexikon: Brutal, tension-free staged thriller that relies on a series of shock effects and strings together the clichés of horror and police films.
