Richard Roundtree (* 9 July 1942 in New Rochelle , New York ) is an African-American film actor who through his role as detective John Shaft in the blaxploitation film Shaft (1971), the two sequels and a television series known is.

Life

Richard Roundtree was one of the main actors in the genre in the 1970s. Before starting his acting career, he worked as a model. After his success with the Shaft series, his other films were not very successful with a few exceptions until the early 1990s. Exceptions include films like Earthquake (1974) or City Heat - Der Bulle und der Schnüffler (1984), in which Roundtree only appeared in supporting roles.

From the beginning of the 90s he became a film icon due to his film past. As a result, he also played in more successful films again, such as David Fincher's Seven and the film Shaft - Still Questions? in which he resumed his role as John Shaft , but this time in a supporting role as the story revolves around Shaft's nephew. He appeared in the same role in Shaft in 2019 . In 2002 he played Jack Blackburn in the movie Joe & Max .

Richard Roundtree was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993 and had to undergo lengthy but successful treatment in the years that followed.
