Shaft - Any questions? (Original title: Shaft ) is an action film from 2000 . Director John Singleton wrote the screenplay with Richard Price and Shane Salerno based on a novel by Ernest Tidyman . Samuel L. Jackson stars as John Shaft in the lead role .

The film with Jackson is designed as a sequel to the Shaft films from the 1970s, in which Richard Roundtree played the leading role. The new shaft appears as the nephew of the original shaft. The then leading actor Roundtree can also be seen in a small role as Shaft's uncle. Gordon Parks , the director of the 1970s Shaft films, made a brief cameo in the film .

action

At the beginning of the film, police investigator John Shaft comes to a crime scene where a black man was knocked down by an unknown person in front of a pub. Shaft is also able to track down a suspect on the basis of clues from the waitress Diane Palmieri (who later turns out to be an eyewitness to the crime). It is Walter Wade Junior from a wealthy family.

Since the waitress was threatened by Wade before, she disappears from the restaurant undetected and goes into hiding for fear of Wade. When the victim dies on the scene and Wade continues to make fun of the victim, Shaft angrily hits him in the face with his fist and is transferred to another unit because of the assault.

Wade is released after his arrest on a small bail - among other things, because he was attacked by Shaft at the crime scene. He then evaded his proceedings for two years by staying in Switzerland. Shaft gets a tip that Wade wants to re-enter the USA with his private jet at the nearby airport and arrests him immediately on his arrival. This time the judge releases Wade again on bail (this time significantly higher) . Shaft then, furiously, quits his job with the police and vows to bring Wade down personally.

Wade hires the drug dealer Peoples Hernandez, who was also arrested by Shaft, to track down and kill the waitress Palmieri. He wants to give Hernandez stolen jewelry worth around 40,000 US dollars in his parents' house for the order. Hernandez would rather have access to the upper classes of society in order to win a wealthy clientele for his drug deals. Hernandez hires two corrupt police officers and promises them US $ 10,000 for clues about Palmieri's whereabouts. The corrupt policemen then pursue Shaft, who can finally locate Palmieri.

Shaft protects Palmieri against Hernandez and his helpers as well as against the corrupt police officers who shoot a colleague when she recognizes the two police officers in a car near Shaft and grows suspicious. When it appears that Shaft has no chance against Hernandez's helpers and the corrupt police officers, the police officer who was shot and survived thanks to the bulletproof vest appears and saves Shaft's life. Peoples Hernandez continues to pursue Shaft and Palmieri. There is a duel between Peoples and Shaft, and Shaft wins.

Shaft ultimately brings Palmieri to the courthouse as a witness. When Wade also wants to enter the building, he is shot by the murdered man's mother in front of the building. A little later, his former colleague tries to persuade him to return to work. Shaft doesn't want to know anything about it. When an abused woman appears at the police station and specifically asks about the policeman Shaft, he first wants to refer the woman to a colleague. When he sees her injuries, he changes his mind and has the perpetrator's name given to personally take care of the matter.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote in ReelViews that "John Singleton proved he could make the films belonging to the genre." Owen Gleiberman compared the film to " Fast Food " in Entertainment Weekly .

“New edition of a film character from the 1970s that transforms the private detective from the original [...] into a fashionably dressed cop who fights for the rights of the black population with force and words. A fake attempt , striving for ' political correctness ', to fashionably reanimate a faded genre that only convinces with its feel for the New York City milieu. "
