The film is about the growing up of the young Tré Styles, who after a brawl at school is deported from his mother to the separated father who lives in South Central Los Angeles. He makes new friends in the neighborhood in an environment marked by countless shootings. His father raises him with a strong focus on responsibility.

Seven years later he still lives with his father, with whom he gets along well. Tré has Brandi as a girlfriend and wants to go to college. His friend Ricky, a good football player, already has a baby. When Ricky is jostled by Ferris, a black gang leader, his brother Doughboy, a drug dealer, pulls a gun to prevent a fight, but provokes Ferris. An enmity arises and Ferris tracks down Doughboy.

After an argument between Ricky and Doughboy, Ricky and Tré leave. Ferris and some of his friends drive past the two of them in the car, whereupon they flee. When they are out of sight and feel safe, Ricky and Tré separate. When Tré looks around, he can warn Ricky about Ferris gang, but Ricky is shot from behind before he can run away a few meters.

Tré is shaken and seeks revenge, which he and Doughboy want to take. His girlfriend Brandi tries to stop him, and his father can talk into his conscience and take a revolver from him, but Tré secretly escapes from the window and still drives away with Doughboy and two other buddies. During the journey, he comes to his senses and gets out again. Doughboy and the other two look for Ferris and shoot him and his two friends.

The next morning, Doughboy tells Tré that he isn't angry with him for getting out instead of avenging Ricky. He becomes aware of the futility and uncertainty of his life. But too late, a few weeks later Doughboy is also murdered. Tré and Brandi go to college in Atlanta , escaping the violence of the neighborhood.
