Roger Troutman (born November 29, 1951 in Hamilton , Ohio , † April 25, 1999 in Dayton , Ohio) was an American musician.
Career
Troutman was the founder of the disco radio group ZAPP , which consisted mostly of brothers. He also had some chart successes solo (I Want To Be Your Man). Characteristic for the special sound of ZAPP / Roger Troutman was the use of a talk box on the keyboards (otherwise mostly used by guitarists in the 1970s) . With this effect device, instrumental playing and the human voice can be mixed with the help of a hose, so that the singing sounds strongly alienated. Interludes of Roger Troutman's Talkbox vocals can also be found in "California Love" by Tupac Shakur (2Pac) and Dr. Dre to hear. In 1996 he was responsible for the score for Mister Bombastic .
Troutman died in 1999 at the Good Samaritan Hospital and Health Center as a result of multiple pistol shots, likely fired by his brother (and ZAPP band member) Larry Troutman. Roger Troutman was found outside his recording studio. His brother Larry was found with the murder weapon a few blocks away in his car - also dead with a shot in the head. The investigation was based on suicide. The motive is unknown.
