Johnny Gill
Johnny Gill (born May 22, 1966 in Washington, DC ) is an American R&B singer and actor. In 1990 he had two top 10 hits in the US with Rub You the Right Way and My, My, My . He had further great successes as a member of the New Edition group and as part of the LSG supergroup .
biography
Johnny Gill sang in the gospel group Wings of Faith at a young age. He also made friends with R&B singer Stacy Lattisaw , who was successful as a teenager and who liked his voice a lot and recommended him to the Cotillion record company . The two remained artistically connected over the years. Gill also signed a contract with Cotillion and recorded three albums here from 1983, including a duet LP with Stacy Lattisaw. The attempt to build him up as a teenage star was only moderately successful. Only the title track from the LP with Lattisaw achieved a top 10 hit in the R&B charts ( Perfect Combination ) in 1984 . Smaller hits were Super Love (1983) and Half Crazy (1985).
In 1987 he became a member of New Edition , his first LP with the group was Heart Break on MCA . Gill was extremely well received by the fans, the album sold over two million times. That is certainly one of the reasons why he continued to aim for a solo career. At the end of 1989 he finally signed for solo releases with the legendary Motown label, with which his childhood friend Stacy Lattisaw was also recording records.
From 1983 onwards, Gill reached over 25 hits in the R&B charts. He was in first place four times: Where Do We Go from Here , a duet with Lattisaw, did not make it into the pop hit lists in early 1990. That changed a little later with Rub You the Right Way and My, My, My (1990), both Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 . Wrap My Body Tight followed in 1991 . The three last-named singles all came from his New Jack Swing- influenced album, Johnny Gill , which sold over three million times in the US alone. It remained his greatest commercial triumph to this day.
In 1992 he had two successes in which he was featured : Silent Prayer was created with Shanice , Slow and Sexy with Shabba Ranks . The latter single received a gold award.
Since the mid-1990s, Gill had not made it into the pop charts, but he was still represented in the R&B hit lists.
In 1997 he recorded the album Levert - Sweat - Gill as LSG with Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat , another great success.
Since the mid-2000s, Gill also tried his hand at acting in several films.
Private
Johnny Gill was never married but has a son who was born in 2006.
