New Edition is an American R & B - band from Boston , which was founded in the 1978th The original members were Bobby Brown , Ralph Tresvant , Ricky Bell, and Michael Bivins. They were discovered by Maurice Starr , a Florida- based music producer who relocated to Boston with his brother Michael in the early 1970s.

Career

The band won a talent competition for the first time in 1980, after which thirteen-year-old Ronnie DeVoe was the last to join. With their first single Candy Girl they had their first international hit in 1983 ( UK number 1 ). The first album of the same name reached number 22 in the US R&B charts and contained hits like Candy Girl , Popcorn Love (number 8 on the US R&B charts) or Is This The End (number 25 on the US R&B charts) . Musically the sound of New Edition was originally influenced by the Jackson Five . In 1984 the five ended their collaboration with Maurice Starr and in 1984 signed a new recording deal with MCA Records. The second album, New Edition , was released soon after, and reached double platinum in the US, number one in the US R&B charts and number six in the US album charts.

The best-known member of the band is Bobby Brown , who had to leave the group in 1986 under pressure from the record company, started a successful solo career in 1987 and married Whitney Houston in July 1992 .

After Brown's departure, a decision was made to fill the place again and the only non-Boston native Johnny Gill was hired . For the upcoming album Heart Break , the producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were hired, whereupon the sound of the group developed from simple teen pop of the 1980s towards adult-sounding soul music. The 1988 release led to four million albums sold (No. 3 in the US R&B charts, double platinum) and thus to the group's next major record success: If It Isn't Love (No. 2 on the US R&B charts, No. 7 in the US singles charts), You're Not My Kind Of Girl (No. 3 on the US R&B charts), Crucial (No. 4 on the US R&B charts), NE Heart Break (No. 13 in the US R&B charts), Charts) and Can You Stand The Rain (No. 1 in the US R&B Charts) with Johnny Gill as the lead voice showed the band's newfound potential for success. Three members - Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe - formed the band Bell Biv DeVoe in the early 1990s , which was also successful. In the mid-1990s and from 2005, New Edition was revived and is still active today.

Brown, Tresvant and Gill have also been in the studio under the name Heads Of State since early 2011 to release an album under producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
