After discovering New Edition on a talent show, Maurice Starr wrote Candy Girl in homage to the Jackson Five , with a few similarities to their 1970 song ABC . Due to vocal similarities to Michael Jackson at a young age, Ralph Tresvant was named Lead singers are used, while Bobby Brown and Ricky Bell can be heard as background singers .
