biography
Arthur Baker began his musical career as a club - DJ . As early as 1978 he began his own productions, initially for example Happy Days with Northend . The move to New York followed . There he worked for the Salsa - label Salsoul Records . One project was Joe Bataan's Rap-O-Clap-O . Baker contributed his remix technique and a special groove feeling to the burgeoning hip-hop scene . Also with sound experiments, e.g. B. with synthetic beats , he made a name for himself.
Because the time in New York was not particularly successful, Baker went back to Boston and produced some less successful singles there, including Glory's Can You Guess What Groove This Is? (1980). The move to the Tommy Boy Records genre label brought Arthur Baker back to the Big Apple in 1982 . There Shep Pettibone became his co-producer. The new partners produced the groundbreaking single Jazzy Sensation for Afrika Bambaataa , a remake of Gwen McCrae's Funky Sensation , and, inspired by Kraftwerk's Trans-Europe Express , the legendary Afrika Bambaataa album Planet Rock .
After founding his own label Streetwise Records , Baker u. a. the band New Edition on their first hit Candy Girl . He founded the studio project Rocker's Revenge , which celebrated success in the US dance charts. From 1983, Arthur Baker dedicated to the Mainstream - Pop and produced artists such as New Order , Naked Eyes , Diana Ross and Jeff Beck , but remained influential in the dance scene.
1989 it came to the collaboration with ABC , Jimmy Somerville and Al Green . This resulted in the album Merge under the name "Arthur Baker & the Backbeat Disciples". After the second long player , Baker concentrated on his work as a producer again, but no longer had as much influence as in previous years.
Arthur Baker was with Tina R. Baker, b. Small married. She was heard under the name Tina B on the soundtrack for Beat Street ( Nothin's' Gonna Come Easy ).
