Beat Street is an American breakdance film from 1984. The film, directed by Stan Lathan, portrays the life of a youthful gang consisting of DJs , breakdancers and sprayers from the Bronx in New York City . The film is one of the most well-known breakdance films, with quite socially critical concerns, but without a raised index finger, and contributed to making breakdance and hip-hop known in the western industrialized countries. The film enjoyed undreamt-of popularity in the GDR and led to the founding of countless associations that dealt exclusively with breakdance, hip-hop and graffiti.

action

The film shows episodes from the lives of the African-American brothers Kenny (Guy Davis) and Lee (Robert Taylor) as well as their friends Chollie (Leon W. Grant) and Ramon (Jon Chardiet), a Puerto Rican sprayer. In the course of the film, Kenny meets the music student Tracy (Rae Dawn Chong), who becomes his girlfriend.

In the finale of the film, DJs, sprayers and breakdancers appear together at a funeral service and give a broad overview of their abilities and skills. The film gives an insight into the early hip-hop scene. He succeeds in making music and dance as well as the special style, attitude and approach to life of the scene at that time understandable for a wider audience.

The film was co-financed and produced by Harry Belafonte . Among other things, the Rock Steady Crew and the New York City Breakers play in this film , who portray themselves. Also greats of the hip-hop scene of the time have appeared in the film , such as Grandmaster Melle Mel and The Furious Five , Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force and Shango, Kool DJ Herc , Tina B. , Brenda K. Starr and The Treacherous Three.

Shortly thereafter, Saundra Santiago celebrated one of her greatest successes in the US series Miami Vice .
