Ezzo (poet)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ezzo von Bamberg († November 15 , probably 1100) was a canon and teacher at the cathedral chapter in Bamberg in the second half of the 11th century . He is the poet of the early Middle High German Ezzo song , a hymn about Christian salvation history .

life and work

There is little evidence of his life and work. In the version of the Vorau manuscript (2nd half of the 12th century), the Ezzo song named after him names an Ezzo from Bamberg as the poet of the text in the first stanza. In addition, the Latin life story ( Vita Altmanni episcopi Pataviensis , written around 1130) of Bishop Altmann von Passau (Bishop from 1065 to 1091) mentions a Canonicus Ezzo . On the pilgrimage of Bishop Gunther from Bamberg to Jerusalem (1064/1065), he wrote a vernacular "Song of the Miracles of Christ" ( cantilena de miraculis Christi ). In general, research assumes that both sources refer to the same person. A note in the Bamberg cathedral calendar mentions November 15 as Ezzo's death date; From other sources it can be dated to the year 1100.
