Rae Dawn Chong

Rae Dawn Chong (born February 28, 1961 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a Canadian actress .

Career

The daughter of comedian Tommy Chong appeared on Canadian television as a child. The mother has Cherokee ancestors and Afro-Canadian origins. Tommy Chong is of Chinese-British origin. Her sister Robbi Chong is a model and actress.

She began acting in 1974 at Disney's Wonderful World . Chong had her first significant role in 1981 in the French film In the Beginning was Fire . The flick made her known overnight and earned her a Genie Award , the Canadian equivalent of the Academy Award. This was followed by films such as Phantom Command with Arnold Schwarzenegger and The Color Purple with Whoopi Goldberg and Danny Glover . Chong not only starred in Mick Jagger's video clip "Just Another Night", but also in his music film Running Out of Luck (1987). In 2000 she made her debut as a director with the horror film Cursed Part 3 .

Chong has a son from her first marriage to Owen Baylis. She met her second husband, C. Thomas Howell , on the set of Soul Man . She was married to him from 1989 to 2002.
