Force of Impact - Deadly Asteroid ( Deadly Skies ) is an American-Canadian science fiction film by Sam Irvin from the year of 2006.

action

The astronomer Madison Kelsey uses her computer simulation to calculate that an asteroid will collide with the earth . The relevant authorities, represented by Covington, believe her. However, General Dutton of the United States Air Force decides that Kelsey's calculations should be ignored.

Kelsey turns to former Air Force officer Donovan, who has resigned under the law known as Don't ask, don't tell . Donovan, Kelsey, Covington and Mark (Donovan's lover in one of the versions of the film) crowd into an Air Force base where a military laser is stationed. At the end of the film, the asteroid is pulverized into tiny pieces.

It is noteworthy that against the backdrop of this disaster scenario, no people are killed. The clear peace-on-demand message of the film becomes clear in the conversation in Donovan's secret camp. Kelsey raises moral concerns about lethal weapons. Donovan and Kelsey then have a discussion based on the Taoist yin-yang principle. The team takes sharp weapons with them (including a sniper), but these are only used to technically checkmate the opponent. The brief anesthesia of the guards at the base creates retarding, dramatic moments.

According to the film, the earth can only be saved by people who observe the principles of humanity and the prohibition of killing.

Reviews

The magazine TV direkt 13/2007 wrote that the film would feature “cheap” special effects. One could forget him.

[/] The quality of the special effects used lags behind technically. In general, these are kept very simple, there are hardly any camera pans in the render scenes and the final scene in particular seems non-violent despite the power of the laser: A short explosion, a few moments later a wonderful falling star shower over Washington.

background

The film was shot in British Columbia .

Three different versions were produced, one of which mainly differs in the depiction of the love affair between the hero Donovan : In the version titled Deadly Skies , he has a relationship with Mark , which consists of two intimate scenes and another in which he explains the reason indicating for discharge from the military. In the other two versions these scenes are missing and the film is therefore about five minutes shorter. There is only a glimmer of this same-sex relationship in some of the dialogues, and in the end a romantic relationship with Kelsey is hinted at. The version with the “Don't ask, don't tell” policy was definitely broadcast in the USA by the gay cable broadcaster Here! advertised, for which it was also produced. In Canada , the censored version was shown under the title Force of Impact . In the United Kingdom, the film was also released on DVD in the censored version, which is slightly different from the Canadian version under the title Ultimate Limit .
