Tommy Chong
Thomas Chong B. Kin (born May 24, 1938 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a Canadian actor and musician who is best known for his stereotypical portrayal of the weed hippy in the role of Anthony in the Cheech and Chong duo with Cheech Marin . His children Rae Dawn Chong , Robbi Chong and Marcus Chong are also actors. He is constantly campaigning for the widespread legalization of cannabis and, despite his now quite old age, is one of the leading figures in the American cannabis movement.
Life
Before moving into the movie business, he was guitarist and songwriter for Motown band Bobby Taylor & the Vancouvers . Among his compositions for the band was Does Your Mama Know About Me, which landed at number 29 on the US pop charts and number 5 on the R&B charts.
Chong played an occasional and later permanent role in the second, third, fourth, as well as the seventh and eighth seasons of the sitcom The Wild Seventies .
In 2003, Chong was among the suspects in two US-wide investigations, code-named Operation Pipe Dreams and Operation Headhunter, targeting companies selling “drug paraphernalia” such as hashish pipes and bongs . He was found guilty of funding and promoting Chong Glass / Nice Dreams , a company founded by his son Paris. Chong confessed to protect his wife Shelby and son from conviction in return. While most of the 55 people involved in the investigation were fined, on September 11th, 2003, Chong was sentenced to nine months in state prison. Shortly thereafter, advocates of legalization formed a Free Tommy Chong! Movement demanding his release. Chong served his sentence from October 8, 2003 to July 7, 2004 and appeared in a one-man show called "The Marijuana-Logues" in December 2004, a parody of Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues . While in custody, he met entrepreneur Jordan Belfort , who was serving his sentence for securities fraud and money laundering. He encouraged him to publish his life story in a book, which was then filmed in 2013 by director Martin Scorsese under the name The Wolf of Wall Street . The Operation Pipe Dreams case was documented by Josh Gilbert in the film AKA Tommy Chong .
Chong is the son of Stanley Chong and Lorna Jean, who in turn were of Chinese and Scottish - Irish descent.
In 2005, Chong returned to his role as Leo on The Roaring Seventies .
In early 2017, he caused quite a stir when he gave a pound of marijuana to the artist Zachary Cole Fernandez, who changed the famous Hollywood lettering to "Hollyweed" on New Year's 2017 . Since 2017, Chong has been selling marijuana and other THC- containing products under its own brand "Chong's Choice" in six American states . In April 2017 he gave a lecture on the topics of cannabis, legalization and legal business opportunities at the International Cannabis Business Conference in Berlin.
