The Masked Singer is an American music show in which celebrities, masked in full body costumes, sing. It is based on the South Korean format King of Mask Singer , which premiered in 2015. There are also offshoots of the format in several countries in Asia and Europe as well as in Australia and Mexico . Nick Cannon is the moderator of the US edition, which, like the German version, is also produced by Endemol . The Masked Singer has aired on Fox in the United States since January 2, 2019 . The station ordered a second season on January 30, 2019 during the current first season, which started on September 25 of the same year. In May 2019, Fox announced that a third season was planned for 2020 , starting on February 2, after the Super Bowl . On May 11, 2020, the show was extended by a fourth season, which is due to premiere on September 23.

From April 22 to May 13, 2020, The Masked Singer: After the Mask was broadcast after each episode , an accompanying program in which Cannon discussed the previous episode with several celebrity guests via video switch at home. These included jurors, former participants and the loser of the episode discussed.

Another spin-off with the title The Masked Dancer , which is based on a segment of the same name in The Ellen DeGeneres Show , should start in summer 2020, but the show could not be produced for the time being due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

concept

In each show, celebrities such as singers , actors or athletes in full body costumes compete against each other with a song of their choice in a singing contest. Before the performance, a short video is shown about each of the costumed persons, in which there are hidden indications of their identity. Celebrity voices are distorted beyond singing.

In the first two episodes of the first season, six candidates competed against each other in duels. In contrast to the German offshoot, the winners are not determined by the television viewers, but by the audience and the jurors. These automatically stay in competition while the losers have to wait until the end of each episode. There the participant with the least total number of votes is eliminated and has to take off his mask while the others, like the winners, take part again.

In the first three episodes as well as the eighth and ninth episodes of the second season, only four candidates competed against each other in duels, the two losers had to sing against each other again in a smackdown , whereby the candidate with the fewest votes was eliminated.

In the third season, the 18 participants were initially divided into three groups of six. All groups initially sang in three episodes until the number of candidates was halved, as in each of these nine episodes the candidate with the fewest votes was eliminated. In the tenth episode, the participants competed against each other again in trials, in the following two episodes again four candidates in duels including smackdown for the two losers.

Another difference to the German version is that not all candidates sing in the same sequence right from the start, but instead take turns singing each week up to a certain number of remaining participants. In addition, there are only three singers in the final, as two participants were eliminated in the semifinals (only one participant in the third season). The program is also not broadcast live, but recorded.

The theme song is Who Are You by The Who , each participant has their own opening music.

Season 1 (2019)

T-Pain, Season One Winner

The first season aired on Fox from January 2 to February 27, 2019. According to the broadcaster, the masked men were nominated for a total of 65 Grammy Awards and 16 Emmys , sold 15 multiple platinum records , sang four pieces on Broadway and won the Super Bowl four times , and four of them also had a star on the Walk of Fame .

Criticism

“The deer is wearing a gas mask and looks like it was welded together from old Mad Max junk. Straightjacket straps dangle from the arms of the giant white rabbit. The hippopotamus wears a silver down jacket like the Primark version of a hip-hop, the lion looks as if Christina Aguilera was glazed with liquid gold in her Moulin Rouge crepe mane phase. The monster is a man-sized turquoise-colored suppository with a fleece cover. The scariest of these horror creatures, however, is the pineapple, a vaguely human-like creature with a plastic strap-on muscle body, Hawaiian shirt and fruit head, into which someone has roughly rammed a kinked drinking straw. The pineapple grins anyway, it can only be explained by drugs. An ensemble of all these wonderful smells, that alone would be enough to make every TV format, well: special. A new television milestone for US broadcaster Fox goes even further: You sing. To the bet. And under their disguises are celebrities, whose identities are kept top secret until immediately after they are expelled. In short: The Masked Singer is completely screwed up and very possibly the best show in the world. "

Kathryn VanArendonk wrote in The New Yorker that the show was like a "feverish dream". Although is The Masked Singer entertaining, but also "strange, silly and stupid" than other music competitions in American television. Describing the atmosphere of the show, she said, “It's like Gritty (the Philadelphia Flyers mascot ) singing Stay With Me by Sam Smith on a professional stage , then called a professional by Jenny McCarthy , and then recognizing herself as Joey Fatone give ”, although the concept would not be far removed from Black Mirror . In addition, the jury is weak in guessing, the jurors devoted themselves to their task with the same understanding and acuteness of a candidate from America's Next Top Model who is trying to decipher a message from the presenter Tyra Banks . In addition, the performances of some candidates are disappointing, as they are not professional singers, VanArendonk drew a comparison with a guest appearance by Ryan Reynolds in the original South Korean format, who sang much better than the US participants in question. However, VanArendonk closed her criticism by saying that the show had a "deeper meaning" as it was a "rather fascinating study of personality cult, mass appeal, achievement, image and celebrity".

According to USA Today's Kelly Lawler , the guessing team is the worst judge on a US reality television show. That is why the fact that the show is still successful testifies to the “brilliance” of the concept. The four jurors are unbalanced as each of them tries in vain to stand out with " Cowell- like" remarks. Robin Thicke is too serious for a show in which rabbit costumes are worn, Jenny McCarthy is referred to as a “pop culture expert” although she has no references for it, Nicole Scherzinger is “bland and ineffective”, while Ken Jeong is between “creepy comments and high-handed drama “vacillates.
