The Clovers
The Clovers were an American rhythm and blues vocal group that had a number of hits in the 1950s. Her most famous track is the song Love Potion No. 9 from 1959.
Career
The group was formed in 1946 at Armstrong High School in Washington, DC The founding members were Harold "Hal" Lucas (tenor / baritone), Billy Shelton (tenor) and Thomas Woods (bass). They were soon joined by John "Buddy" Bailey (tenor), and Lucas took over the baritone.
The Clovers were modeled on groups like the Orioles and the Ravens . In the course of their career there have been a number of staff changes and the size of the group has fluctuated between a quintet and a trio .
In 1950 Lou Krefetz became the group's manager. He got them a contract with Rainbow Records , where they produced the classic Yes Sir, That's My Baby in November 1950 . In February 1951 they switched to Ahmet Ertegüns Atlantic Records . The group at the time consisted of Harold Lucas Junior, John Bailey, Harold Winley, Matthew McQuarter and guitarist Bill Harris.
Her first recording session at Atlantic took place on February 22, 1951 at Apex Recording Studios , from which the lively Don't You Know I Love You and the ballad Skylark emerged . The resulting single in March 1951 reached the top position of the US R&B charts and was sold over 250,000 times - a high turnover for the rhythm and blues records of the time. The successor title Fool, Fool, Fool (recorded on July 12, 1951 in the WHOM Studios) also made the top position and even sold over 500,000 copies. On December 19, 1951, One Mint Julep was a hit in the Atlantic studios , which could penetrate to number 2 on the R&B charts. Other hits include Ting-a-Ling (recorded March 18, 1952), Good Lovin ' (March 4, 1953), Lovey Dovey (September 24, 1953), Blue Velvet (December 16, 1954) and Devil or Angel ( November 11, 1955).
When the Atlantic contract expired in late 1957, Krefetz brought the Clovers to his own label Poplar Records , which was eventually bought by United Artists Records . Here they had their biggest hit in July 1959 with the humorous Leiber / Stoller composition Love Potion No. 9 , of the 1965 Searchers gecovert was. The text is about a young man who is unsuccessful with girls, who goes to a fortune teller who, by reading hands, draws his attention to "love potion number 9". This seems unexpectedly consistent, because the young man now kisses everything that comes in his way, including a police officer. After this fatal effect, he wonders what will only happen after taking "love potion number 10".
After the end of the contract with United Artists, the group broke up in late 1961. As a result, there were sometimes different versions of the clovers at the same time. Some offshoots operated under other names such as "Tippie and the Clovermen", "Tippie and the Wisemen", "The Fabulous Clovers" or "Tippie and the Clovers". The latter formation with the lead singer Roosevelt "Tippie" Hubbard took the bodies - & - Stoller original Bossa Nova Baby on 19 October 1962 as the first on that shortly thereafter by Elvis Presley on 22 January 1963 for the film Fun in Acapulco gecovert has been.
Awards
In 1989 the Clovers received the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation . In 2002 they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the United in Group Harmony (UGHA) Hall of Fame.
