Never Gonna Give You Up is a 1987 single by Rick Astley , written and produced by Stock Aitken Waterman .
Never Gonna Give You Up was released as the first single from Astley's debut album Whenever You Need Somebody (1987). The song was a number one hit in the UK . It stayed at the top of the charts for five weeks and was the best-selling single that year. It reached chart placements in 25 countries, including the United States and West Germany.
The song won the title of Best British Single at the BRIT Awards in 1988 . In 2004 it was number 28 on the 50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs… Ever by VH1 .
The music video of the song is the basis for the Internet phenomenon " Rick Rolling ". In 2008, Rick Astley won the MTV Europe Music Award in the Best Act Ever category for the song as a result of the collective voting of thousands of people on the internet due to the virality of rickrolling. It was also featured as a download for the " Rock Band " series. Since about 2016 the song can be found on the internet as a " meme ". The song, including a dance based on Astley's movements, is also used as an emote in the worldwide video game Fortnite . It was the first time that Epic Games acquired an official license for this ; the emote was also presented on Twitter by Astley himself.
