VH1 (since January 2013 stylized VI + 1 ) is an American television station with headquarters in New York City and branches in other countries. The abbreviation VH1 originally stood for "Video Hits One".

Origin and history

VH1 was founded in 1985 in the USA as an MTV spin-off from Viacom and was intended to stand out from the usual MTV philosophy. The station was designed for the adult target group and therefore a bit older than MTV in terms of music selection. Some of the formats produced could also be seen on MTV Germany , such as B. "VH1 All Access". Similar to MTV, VH1 has gradually reduced the proportion of music videos in the program. Since December 2015, VH1 has stopped broadcasting music videos, only reality shows , documentaries and documentary soaps . Most of the international branches, including VH1 Europe and VH1 UK , are still pure music channels. One of the last music shows on VH1 was the VH1 Top 20 video countdown , where the top songs could be voted on every week on the Internet.

Since January 5, 2013, VH1 has been broadcasting with a new on-air design and a new logo with a stylized "+". This is closely based on the first logo and should show that the program consists of reality programs on the one hand, and that music videos will continue to be shown on the other hand, limited to the early hours of the morning. This original concept is now superfluous, since VH1 later completely removed the music videos from the program.

Every year, the VH1 Awards are presented, in which artists and celebrities from various categories such as “Best Comeback ”, “Best It Girl ” etc. are chosen.
