MTV Hits is a digital pay-TV - music channel in the UK . The broadcast started on July 1, 1999 under the name MTV Extra, which was renamed to the current name on May 1, 2001.

The program mainly contains current music from the mainstream sector , but also music formats with a focus on dance , rock , R'n'B or specifically older music videos . Due to legal regulations, a certain part of the program must be filled with content for the deaf , which is why reality show formats of the mother station MTV One are broadcast in the night program. Occasionally, MTV Hits also shows such formats in the evening program or evening program. But usually the focus is on broadcasting music videos.

Despite its content orientation towards Great Britain, the station will continue to be marketed throughout Europe via cable in Germany as well. These include countries such as France , Ireland , Poland , Romania , Hungary and the Benelux countries .

MTV Hits Europe

Since the end of May 2014, a European version of MTV Hits has been distributed in many European countries, including Germany and Austria. The main difference between the station and its British sister station is that it eliminates teleshopping and advertising, but also eliminates any moderated clip series.

In the European version, the station continuously plays current chart music from the genres of pop, dance and occasionally rock.

MTV Hits Europe is also available in Germany as a stream in the MTV Play app with a premium subscription.

On April 5, 2017, MTV changed the color of the logo for MTV Hits Europe as well as for the UK version

MTV Hits is no longer part of MTV Play and its app in Germany since March 1, 2018.

From September 30, 2019, the distribution of MTV Hits Europe via Astra 19.2 ° East will be discontinued. The affected broadcaster MTV Hits Europe will switch from the Astra satellite system to the Thor 0.8 ° West satellite, which belongs to the Norwegian satellite operator Telenor. In this context, the provider Technisat announced that its previous package "MTV Unlimited", which also includes MTV Hits Europe, will also be discontinued on September 30, 2019.

Alternatively, MTV Hits Europe could still be received in Germany via Diveo. However, on November 30, 2019, Diveo also ceased operations, so that the station MTV Hits can no longer be received there.
