Country Music Television (CMT) is an American television station that specializes in country music .

CMT first aired on March 5, 1983 from Hendersonville . Founder and President was Glenn D. Daniels, a Texan country DJ. At first the channel was shortened to CMTV, but after complaints from MTV , the V was omitted. The family business produced music videos and showed them on its channel.

After years of struggling to establish itself in the market, the station was acquired in 1991 by Gaylord Broadcasting and Group W Satellite Communications for more than $ 30 million. The two companies already owned CMT's direct competitor, The Nashville Network . In the 1990s, CMT reached nearly 30% of US households and 42% of cable television owners. The channel went on air in Europe in 1992 (as part of DF1 in Germany ), in the Asia-Pacific region in 1994, and in Latin America in 1995. In 1997 the station went to Westinghouse , the owner of CBS Corporation , and was later integrated into MTV Networks via Viacom .
