DF1 was the first digital television station in Germany. On July 28, 1996, the station went on air for the first time locally, albeit only with a technical test license. DF1, based in Unterföhring near Munich , was part of the Kirch group under the German media entrepreneur Leo Kirch . The general partner was DF1 Digitales Fernsehen Verwaltungs-GmbH.
The station emerged from a dispute between the shareholders Bertelsmann , Canal + and Kirch on the one hand and the then premiere Medien GmbH & Co. KG, the operating company of the pay-TV channel Premiere, on the other. So the entry into digital television should take place later, using the Mediabox decoder already used by Canal + in France with SECA-Mediaguard-1 encryption system. So Leo Kirch set up DF1 himself without further ado, ordered 1,000,000 d-box -1 devices from Nokia and fed DF1 with goods exclusively from his film and sports rights archive. BBC Prime and NBC content was added over time.
From the start of broadcasting, DF1 was initially only received via satellite ( Astra ). In 1997, a court order forbade the nationwide broadcasting of the station. Later the program platform was gradually fed into the cable network. To receive DF1 you needed a decoder, the d-box. A subscription was required to view the programs on offer. Kirch sought to merge DF1 and Premiere, which was prohibited by the European Commission .
As a result, the Premiere shareholders Bertelsmann (37.5%) and Canal + (37.5%) largely sold their shares to the Kirch Group and nothing stood in the way of a merger between DF1 and Premiere. On October 1, 1999, it became Premiere World. In February 2002 this name was renamed to Premiere on the initiative of the then managing director Georg Kofler .
