Discovery Channel is the name of an originally US-American family of television channels that is now broadcast worldwide and whose programs are exclusively dedicated to documentaries . Discovery Channel is part of the international Discovery Inc. The Discovery Channel is now broadcast in 155 countries in 33 languages.

On April 2, 2019, Discovery Inc. announced that the Discovery Channel is getting a new logo and OnAir design globally.

Emergence

Discovery Channel was founded on June 17, 1985 by John Hendricks . Just three years later, the station had 32.1 million subscribers . In the following years the station developed further and has been broadcast in more and more countries since then. While in the early years an intermittent program was broadcast, Discovery Channel now broadcasts around the clock, via satellite and cable TV as well as IPTV .

On November 30, 2012, an HD simulcast offshoot started on the Sky Deutschland platform . There it replaced the previous station Discovery HD , which had shown a different program window than the Discovery Channel. Since November 2015, the Discovery Channel on Sky can only be received via DVB-S2.

program

The program, which is broadcast on pay TV and free TV in many countries around the world, is mostly geared towards the respective market, but mainly productions from the USA are shown.

Discovery Channel Germany

The Discovery Channel has been on the air in Germany since August 27, 1996. Initially via the DF1 television platform . After the merger of DF1 with Premiere to form Premiere World in 1999, the channel was included in the program offering and continues to broadcast today. The station currently has over two million subscribers in Germany. In addition to the television program, the Discovery Channel has also been on the Internet since July 1995, and since July 28, 1996 also in German. Until the insolvency of Kirch Media and Kirch PayTV in spring 2002, the Discovery Channel was a joint venture between Discovery Communications, Inc. and Kirch PayTV, both companies held 50 percent of the shares in the German-speaking Discovery Network. Since 2003 the Discovery Channel has been fully owned by Discovery Communications Germany. The company is based in Munich . The German Discovery Channel is broadcast from the APS Playout Center in Unterföhring. The Discovery Channel in Germany is operated by Discovery Communications Deutschland GmbH in Munich. Discovery Channel works with various other companies, such as ZDF or the Discovery Channel IMAX Berlin , which was closed in 2006 .

There are around 30 premieres on the Discovery Channel each month. In addition, the Discovery Channel hosts at least one theme week or weekend each month. There, the broadcaster deals with a special topic to a somewhat larger extent. Most programs on the air last no longer than 55 minutes.

Discovery Channel HD

Until November 30, 2012, an HD offshoot was broadcast under the name Discovery HD . The 24-hour German-language program showed Discovery productions in high-resolution image quality and digital sound. In the morning hours of November 30, 2012, this was discontinued as previously announced and replaced on the same slot by the simulcast version of Discovery Channel in HD. The program is part of the Sky Entertainment package .

criticism

The Discovery Channel is occasionally accused of increasing the entertainment value and thus the ratings in some programs at the expense of the educational effect. For example, Virginia Heffernan of the New York Times wrote :

"Watching these guys ... make their runs, it's hard not to share in their cold, fatigue and horrible highway hypnosis, that existential recognition behind the wheel late at night that the pull of sleep and the pull of death are one and the same. ... [I] t gets right exactly what Deadliest Catch got right, namely that the leave-nothing-but-your-footprints, green kind of eco-travelers are too mellow and conscientious to be interesting to watch. Instead, the burly, bearded, swearing men who blow methyl hydrate into their own transmissions and welcome storms as breaks from boredom ... are much better television. "

- Virginia Heffernan : The New York Times

Further criticism is expressed of the tone of the programs, which can hardly be stopped. You can also hear previous messages when you change programs.
