Channel 5 is a private television station in Sweden , which was founded in 1989 and today the Discovery Inc. belongs.

After a difficult start, Kanal 5 launched new strategies in the early 2000s to establish itself as an entertainment channel for young people. The channel's motto is "Roligare TV" ("Funnier TV") and entertainment shows such as series, films, reality shows and infotainment programs are shown. In 2006, Kanal 5 was the most popular Swedish channel among the 15- to 24-year-olds target group.

history

On March 8, 1989, businessman Matts Carlgren announced that he intended to set up an advertising-financed television station , as Jan Stenbeck had previously done with TV3 . The station was named Nordic Channel and went on air on March 27, 1989.

In the first few years, the station made heavy losses. In 1991 the station was sold to the SBS Broadcasting Group . Its owner Harry Evans Sloan had previously bought Kanal 2 in Copenhagen and TV Norge in Norway. He renamed the station TV5, but the French broadcaster TV5 Monde complained against it, so that the broadcaster TV5 Nordic had to be named. That was at the beginning of cable television, when the French TV5 broadcaster was broadcast on the Swedish cable network. Ultimately, TV5 Nordic changed its name in 1994 and became known as Femman ("the fifth"). On February 4, 1996, the station changed its name to Channel 5.
