TVN is a Polish private television station of the Polish TVN Group, which, in turn, the US Discovery Inc. belongs. The broadcaster is based in Warsaw . TVN is considered to be more liberal and an alternative to the public broadcaster TVP , which is controlled by the respective government.

program

Well-known TVN programs are or were Fakty, Uwaga, Na wspólnej ( Among us ), Mam talent! ( Got Talent ), Milionerzy ( Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? ), Ameryka Express ( Peking Express ), MasterChef, talk shows and TV series.

The TVN group owns a wide range of programs. The main channel TVN shows entertainment and information programs as well as feature films .

History of the station

TVN started on October 3, 1997, the broadcaster received the broadcasting license in March 1997. The owner of TVN at the start of broadcasting was the ITI group . The name is derived from Telewizja Nowa (New Television).

In 2001, during the Big Brother finals, the station reached 10 million viewers to date, the highest number of viewers in its history. In 2004, 86% of Polish television receivers were able to receive TVN.

Lex TVN

In July 2021, the ruling party PiS initiated a law against the control of Polish media companies by foreign owners. Observers see this as an attempt to influence reporting by TVN and its news channel TVN24 , which is critical of the government , which is why the law is also known as Lex TVN . The draft law stipulated that investors from outside the European Economic Area could own a maximum of 49 percent of the shares in a Polish television station. Since TVN is indirectly wholly owned by Discovery Inc. through Polish Television Holding, which is registered in the Netherlands, the broadcaster was threatened with withdrawal of its broadcasting license. Oppositionists criticized the draft law and feared that the freedom of the press in Poland would be jeopardized . The United States government and representatives of the European Commission also criticized it.

On August 11, 2021, the Sejm approved the law, which led to the departure of the Porozumienie party from the ruling coalition. In the run-up to the vote, there were nationwide protests against the law. After the Polish Senate rejected the law on September 9, 2021, the Sejm overruled the Senate on December 17 in a previously unannounced vote, the Lex TVN was therefore considered passed. The passage of the law sparked protests across the country. Tens of thousands of people demonstrated against the law and for freedom of the press.

On December 27, 2021, Polish President Andrzej Duda vetoed the law. He justified his move with the assessment that the law violated the constitution and endangered Polish-American relations. Duda's veto can only be rejected by a three-fifths majority in the Sejm, but the government led by the PiS does not have one.

TVN group

The TVN Group was founded in 1995 as TVN Sp. Z oo.

In 2004, with its debut on the Warsaw Stock Exchange , the company was converted into a joint stock company and TVN Sp. Z oo became TVN SA

The Polish Internet portal Onet.pl has been part of the TVN Group since May 30, 2006 . In May 2007, TVN bought the teleshopping channel Mango . In November 2009 the TVN group took over the PayTV platform n .

In March 2015, the US broadcaster Scripps Networks Interactive Inc. (SNI) acquired a majority stake of 52.7% in the TVN Group for EUR 584 million. In July 2015, SNI took over the TVN group from the remaining owners, the ITI group and the Canal + group, for EUR 584 million .

On March 6, 2018, Discovery Inc. acquired SNI for $ 14.6 billion. Liberty Global , a major shareholder of Discovery Inc., operates the pay-TV provider UPC Polska in Poland . The European Commission therefore asked TVN to ensure that TVN24 and TVN24 BiS remain available to third-party providers .

reporting

TVN reporters reported on racist unrest in Poland in 2017. TVN's broadcast van was set on fire during a parade of Polish nationalists. The editor-in-chief of the broadcaster Andrzej Morozowski assumed a targeted action by the right-wing extremists, as TVN reported extensively and in detail on the growing xenophobia in Poland. Observers saw it as a much more objective reporting than on the government-loyal public television in Poland.
