history

The television channel started in 1996 under the name Discovery Civilization Network: The World History and Geography Channel . In April, 2002 the New York Times Television and Discovery Communications announced that it is a joint venture have agreed to the transmitter Discovery Civilization Channel to operate. Until then, the station was available in 14 million households. The aim of the joint venture is to supplement historical television programs with programs about current events and contemporary history . On March 25, 2003, the station was renamed the Discovery Times to focus more on American culture as well as more on American welfare. The previous sender name was described by those responsible for the sender with a slightly different message (original: "is a little off-message" ). In April 2006, The New York Times sold its shares in the station back to Discovery Communications .

On January 27, 2008, Discovery Times was renamed Investigation Discovery .

In 2015, Investigation Discovery was the 27th most watched network in the United States.

In 2016, due to the renewed high popularity of "True Crime" formats, the station was the second cable broadcaster with the highest reach among women between 25 and 54 years of age. The station was also the 23rd most viewed station in the United States in 2016 and 2017.
