Discovery, Inc. (formerly known as Discovery Communications ) is an American global media and entertainment company founded in 1985 in the United States by the John Hendricks Discovery Channel . The German channels are operated by Discovery Communications Deutschland GmbH in Munich .

Discovery Communications is a subsidiary of Discovery Holding Company , formerly part of Liberty Global (the largest cable operator outside the United States). The CEO and Chairman of Discovery Holding Company, John C. Malone , is also Chairman of Liberty Global.

On July 16, 2015, it became known that Discovery Communications had sold the radio stations of the Scandinavian SBS Group, which it had taken over from ProSiebenSat.1 together with the TV stations of SBS, to the Bauer Media Group . In 2017, the pay TV provider Scripps Networks Interactive (operates Travel Channel , Food Network , HGTV , among others ) was taken over.

It started broadcasting in Germany in April 2004, with German and international productions being broadcast. The program is organized by Discovery Communications Deutschland GmbH based in Munich. Program collaborations exist with Spiegel TV and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). Until June 30, 2009, Animal Planet was broadcast digitally via satellite and cable as part of Premiere's program package . As a replacement at Sky Deutschland , as Premiere has been called since July 2009, the station was replaced by the new animal station National Geographic Wild. Instead, the station has been available via the cable network operator Unitymedia since July 1, 2009, via Kabel BW since September 1, 2010, and via Deutsche Telekom's IPTV platform Telekom Entertain since March 8, 2010.

The Discovery Channel has been on the air in Germany since August 27, 1996 - initially on the DF1 television platform. After the merger of DF1 with Premiere to form Premiere World in 1999, the channel was included in the program offering and continues to broadcast today. The station currently has over two million subscribers in Germany. In addition to the television program, the Discovery Channel has also been on the Internet since July 1995, and in German since July 28, 1996.

DMAX

DMAX is a private television broadcaster that primarily broadcasts reports, documentaries, real-life programs and lifestyle magazines aimed at male viewers. The station is broadcast via satellite and cable television and can currently be received by 70% of households via these distribution channels. In addition, DMAX is broadcast via the P2PTV programs Zattoo, Joyn and Wilmaa (currently only in Switzerland). Terrestrial broadcasting via DVB-T was discontinued in 2009.

Discovery Communications has held a 20% stake in Eurosport since December 2012 and has held all shares in this broadcaster since July 2015. Eurosport can be received in many countries, in Germany Eurosport 1 is one of the channels of free TV and Eurosport 2 is transmitted in encrypted form without exception .
