season 1

Betty Suarez, 22, lives in Queens , New York with her Mexican father and older sister and their underage son Justin . On the outside, she is rather unattractive and has no sense of fashion and styling. Betty has good school qualifications and wants to advance professionally, but is inexperienced, good-natured and sometimes slightly naive outside of her familiar surroundings. She suffers a sudden culture shock when they have a job at "Mode", a trendy fashion - magazine gets in Manhattan, which is part of the publishing group of Bradford Meade. His son Daniel has just been appointed the new editor-in-chief of "Mode" after the death of Fey Sommers (Bradford's long-term affair). Since Daniel has often had affairs with attractive employees in the past, his father hires the unattractive Betty as his new assistant, ignoring her apparent inexperience. Over time, Betty and Daniel become friends and help each other navigate their professional and personal lives.

Working at “Mode” is made more difficult for Betty and Daniel by the staff. Her greatest threat comes from creative director Wilhelmina Slater, a vengeful intriguer who makes numerous plans to steal Daniel's job and take control of his company. Additionally, Wilhelmina's loyal assistant Marc St. James and “fashion” receptionist Amanda Sommers constantly humiliate and taunt Betty for her lackluster looks, awkward nature, and lack of taste in fashion. However, not everyone is against Betty in “Mode”; she makes loyal friends, for example the tailor Christina McKinney and the accountant Henry Grubstick. She also receives strong support from her family, who at the same time have to deal with their own problems. Her father Ignacio is struggling with the immigration authorities and his health problems, and Betty's older sister Hilda tries to find a job and to save the relationship with Justin's father.

season 2

The focus is on the triangular relationship between Betty, Henry and Giovanni "Gio" Rossi, an employee of a delicatessen store, as well as Claire's stay and escape from prison as well as the broken wedding of Wilhelmina Slater and Bradford Meade. Daniel and Alexis' power struggle ignites after their father dies, while Amanda searches for her birth father and Marc begins a relationship with fashion photographer Cliff St. Paul. Hilda tries to make a professional career as a beautician , while in her private life a liaison with Justin's gym teacher develops. After a long time Christina sees her sick husband again and Wilhelmina tries to create an heir from Bradford's sperm.

season 3

Wilhelmina finally gets the post of editor-in-chief and takes over Betty as assistant. With the hiring of Kimmie, who annoyed Betty in high school, a new competitor appears who fights with unfair means. In order to advance her professional development, she and Marc register for a training course for young editors, the YETI program. There she meets the sports reporter Matt Hartley and after a few dates they get together. When it turns out that he comes from a very rich and influential family, Daniel hopes for financial help, because "fashion" is in crisis due to the embezzlement of his new business partner Connor Owens. Connor also stands in his way privately, because Daniel is seriously in love with his fiancée Molly, who suffers from cancer. After Connor has gone abroad, Daniel and Molly get married. After Betty runs into Henry again, Matt watches the two kiss goodbye. Thereupon he separates from Betty. Mode wins the Mama Award for their marriage edition. Molly, who actually wanted to come to the award ceremony, dies of cancer.

Season 4

In her new job at "Mode" as a culture - editor Betty has come to terms with her ex-boyfriend Matt, who's there her new boss. In addition, she is assigned Marc as an assistant, who does not always work loyally. Her sister Hilda meets her former crush Bobby, whom she is gradually getting closer to. Towards the end of the season, Betty received a lucrative job offer, albeit in London . Hilda becomes pregnant and considers moving to Bobby in Manhattan.

Daniel, on the other hand, has problems dealing with Molly's death at the beginning of the season and misses Betty as an assistant. His new assistant Natalie, a member of the Phoenix Congregation, introduces him to leader Dylan Bennett. When Bennett influences Daniels' creative processes and business decisions, Betty, Claire, Matt and Amanda strive to free him from the cult.
