Jeff Beal

Jeff Beal (born June 20, 1963 in Hayward , California ) is an American composer and jazz musician who plays the trumpet and flugelhorn . His works are characterized by a mixture of improvisation and composition .

Live and act

Beal's parents both grew up listening to house music , and his mother learned to play the piano as a child. Musical instruments were presented to the students at a school meeting, of which Beal chose the trumpet as his instrument at the age of 8. His grandmother Irene was a recognized pianist , professional silent film accompanist and also a fan of jazz music. It was through them that Beal got to know the music of Miles Davis and Gil Evans . At the age of 16 he wrote his first jazz trumpet concerto for the Oakland Youth Orchestra . He later studied composition and trumpet at the Eastman School of Music , graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1985 . While still a student, he was awarded 11 student prizes by the jazz magazine Down Beat for his recordings as a jazz trumpeter, composer and arranger .

Beal's debut album Liberation was released in 1987 by Island Records . Two years later his first score for the film Cheap Shots came out. Other compositions for film and television followed. In 2000, Beal won more attention through his work for the Oscar-winning film Pollock by Ed Harris . In the following years, Beal was particularly successful with his music for television series, from several nominations for the Emmy Awards , including three for the series Rome (2006 and 2007) and most recently for the television film Loving Leah (2009), he won this once in the category “Outstanding Theme Music” for the series Monk .

Beal continued to write chamber music works; his Concerto for Jazz Bass and Orchestra was written for John Patitucci , who also recorded it. He wrote a marimba concerto for Dave Samuels . His clarinet concerto has been interpreted by Eddie Daniels and Paquito D'Rivera , among others .

In 2001 he was named by Variety magazine as one of "20 creatives to be observed". In 2018 he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year. He currently lives in Southern California with his wife, Joan Sapiro Beal ( soprano ) and their son Henry.

He has multiple sclerosis .
