David "Dave" Samuels (* 9. October 1948 in Waukegan , Illinois ; † 22. April 2019 in New York City ) was an American jazz - vibraphone and marimba poker players.

Live and act

Samuels started playing drums when he was six. He studied psychology at Boston University and then music and music at Berklee College of Music in Boston. a. with Gary Burton (he learned mallet percussion there ). Already in Boston he played z. B. with Pat Metheny and John Scofield and started teaching. In 1974 he toured with Gerry Mulligan , with whom he also made his first recordings. In the 1970s he also played with Frank Zappa , the groups "Time Piece" and "Double Image" (1977 to 1980, with the vibraphonist David Friedman ). From 1979 he played with Spyro Gyra and became a permanent member of the band in 1986. He stayed with the Fusion formation until the mid-1990s and then initiated the Caribbean Jazz Project , which he initially led with the alto saxophonist and clarinetist Paquito D'Rivera and steel drummer Andy Narell (he mostly plays marimba there). In 2003 the Caribbean Jazz Project , which he was leading with Dave Valentin at the time , received the Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album for the album The Gathering .

Samuels also released albums under his own name from the 1980s. In the field of jazz he was involved in 164 recording sessions between 1974 and 2015.
