David Friedman (* 10. March 1944 in New York City , New York) is an American jazz - vibraphone and Marimbaphonist .

Live and act

Friedman studied drums and xylophone in the 1950s and 1960s and attended the Juilliard School of Music . He also learned from Teddy Charles and Hall Overton . In the following years he gained a wide range of musical experiences working with Leonard Bernstein , Luciano Berio , Bobby McFerrin , Wayne Shorter and Yoko Ono . He has performed live and on records with musicians such as Joe Henderson , Horace Silver , Johnny Griffin , Jane Ira Bloom , Ron Carter , Joe Chambers , Hubert Laws , Horacee Arnold , Dino Betti van der Noot and John Scofield .

In 1975 he founded The Mallet Duo , in 1977 he and Dave Samuels were among the founders of the marimba-vibraphone quartet Double Image . The album Shades of Change (1982), recorded with Geri Allen, Anthony Cox and Ronnie Burrage , was ranked among the twenty best CDs of the year by Down Beat magazine . On the 1992 album Ternaire he was listening to Daniel Humair and Jean-François Jenny-Clark .

With the bandoneon player Dino Saluzzi and the bassist Anthony Cox he worked on a project about Astor Piazzolla's tango compositions. With Jean-Louis Matinier and Anthony Cox he recorded the CD Other Worlds in 1996 . He also worked with the NDR Big Band and the musicians Jasper van't Hof and John Taylor . In 2003 he founded the Trio Tambour with Peter Less and Pepe Berns , whose CD Earfood was released in 2004.

In the 1970s Friedman taught at the Manhattan School of Music and the Montreux's Institute for Advanced Musical Studies . Since 1989 he has been professor for vibraphone and composition at the University of the Arts in Berlin ; from 2005 Friedman taught at the newly founded Jazz Institute Berlin . After his official retirement in 2012, he was asked to accompany his current students until they graduate. As a result, he worked at the institute for a few more years.
