Charles Samuel "Chuck" Loeb (born December 7, 1955 in Nyack , New York ; † July 31, 2017 ) was an American jazz guitarist , composer , arranger and music producer .

Life

Loeb grew up in Nyack (NY), a suburb of New York City . He has played guitar since he was 11, discovered jazz at the age of 16 and took lessons from Jim Hall , Pat Metheny and Joe Puma . From 1974 to 1976 he studied at Berklee College of Music . From 1977 to 1978 he was part of Chico Hamilton's band , then Ray Barretto's . Between 1979 and 1981 he was a member of Stan Getz's band and from 1984 to 1987 with Steps Ahead together with Michael Brecker , Michael Mainieri , Peter Erskine and Victor Bailey .

From 1988 he was also on the road as a solo artist and as a studio musician on numerous international publications, including for the German artists Thomas Quasthoff and Till Brönner . In 1994 Loeb founded the fusion band Metro with Wolfgang Haffner and Mitchel Forman . After Larry Carlton left , Loeb replaced him in 2010 with the internationally renowned smooth jazz formation Fourplay , with whom he had been touring extensively since 2010.

From 1979 he was married to the Spanish singer Carmen Cuesta-Loeb and the father of two daughters. His daughter Lizzy Loeb is a singer-songwriter. Loeb often spent free time in Spain because of his wife and daughters. New York City was still the base for work. The book The Best Of Chuck Loeb , published by Hal Leonard, contains ten of Loeb's compositions.

Loeb died in 2017 at the age of 61 after several years of treatment for cancer.
