Wolfgang Haffner (* 7. December 1965 in Wunsiedel ) is a German jazz - drummer .
Life
Haffner grew up as the son of an organ builder and a church musician and learned to play the drums and piano from the age of seven; among other things he received lessons from Evert Fraterman . In 1983 he was on tour with Konstantin Wecker . Between 1984 and 1989 Haffner was a member of the Franco-German jazz ensemble; later he played in the big band of Peter Herbolzheimer , with Chaka Khan (1994-1995) and Klaus Doldingers Passport (1989-2000). He also played drums in the NDR big band and the hr big band . He is also a studio and live musician, and he also composes and produces for other artists, including for the Icelandic band Mezzoforte, on some of whose releases he can be heard as a drummer.
Haffner works in the field of jazz and especially funk as a drummer and accompanied the No Angels on their swing album or played on recordings by Nils Landgren and his Nils Landgren Funk Unit , e.g. B. on the 2004 released sound carrier "funky abba". In 2000 he went on tour together with Albert Mangelsdorff , Klaus Doldinger, Manfred Schoof , Wolfgang Dauner and Eberhard Weber as Old Friends . A. on the road with Till Brönner .
His own music is funk . On his own albums and appearances, he therefore often plays with the Swedish bassist Magnum Coltrane Price from the Nils Landgren Funk Unit . With an acoustic jazz trio made up of Lars Danielsson on bass and Hubert Nuss on piano, he recorded the album Shapes in 2008 and performed at the Burghausen Jazz Week . In addition to Chuck Loeb and Mitchel Forman, he is a regular member of the jazz fusion quartet Metro .
For his 2012 album Heart of the Matter , Haffner worked with Götz Alsmann , Till Brönner , Thomas Quasthoff , Sebastian Studnitzky and Sting guitarist Dominic Miller . In November 2014 he received the city of Nuremberg's € 10,000 cultural prize.
His album Kind of Cool (ACT 2015) was released on both CD and vinyl. The all-star cast included Jan Lundgren , Christopher Dell , Dan Berglund , Dusko Goykovich and Jukka Perko . Even before it was released, the bandleader gave concerts nationwide with the material from the album.
The name of the Kind of Spain album is explained by the fact that the musician had his main residence on the Spanish island of Ibiza until recently , before he recently moved to Germany. The CD 4 Wheel Drive , for which he was jointly responsible for Nils Landgren , Michael Wollny and Lars Danielsson , reached number 1 in the Media Control jazz annual charts in 2019 and is therefore the best-selling jazz album of the year in Germany.
