Ilg was discovered and promoted by Joe Viera in 1979 . Between 1981 and 1986 Ilg studied classical double bass with Wolfgang Stert at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg ; then he was a scholarship holder at the Manhattan School of Music in 1986 and 1987 .
Ilg had been part of Viera's sextet since 1984, then one of the co-founders of Klaus Ignatzek's band , with whom he recorded seven albums. Between 1987 and 1989 he was a member of the Randy Brecker quintet (tours through the United States and Europe, recordings). Between 1991 and 2004 he played in the quintet of Albert Mangelsdorff and Wolfgang Dauner . Between 1994 and 1997 Ilg was part of the Nguyên Lê trio . With Charlie Mariano, Ilg formed a duo from 2001 until Mariano's death in 2009 (common recordings are A la carte, Eisenhans and Due ) with international concert tours in Europe, India and Japan. This experience culminated in the solo project [Bass] in 2008 with numerous solo concerts, among others at the Jazzfest Berlin 2008. Marc Copland , Roberto di Gioia and Wolfgang Haffner also played in his own groups . He continued to work with Rolf Kühn , Christof Lauer , Dave Liebman , Bennie Wallace , Sadao Watanabe , Dave Friedman , Trilok Gurtu , Joanne Brackeen , Dhafer Youssef , Nils Landgren , Rebekka Bakken , Till Brönner , Thomas Quasthoff , Klaus Ignatzek and many others.
Ilg released his first production Summerhill in 1991 under his own name , with Randy Brecker, Mike Stern , Bob Berg , Jim Beard and Peter Erskine . In a trio with Wolfgang Muthspiel and Steve Argüelles , he released two studio albums (Folk Songs and Fieldwork) and a live production (LIVEILG) with arrangements of folk songs between 1997 and 2001. In 2001 Ilg founded his own label Fullfat exclusively with his own productions. An example of this is Otello , based on the opera of the same name by Giuseppe Verdi in a trio with pianist Rainer Böhm and drummer Patrice Héral . For this Ilg received an Echo Jazz in 2011 . Ilg's music has been published on ACT since 2011. His trio has since released Otello live at Schloss Elmau in October 2011 , Parsifal in January 2013 and Mein Beethoven in January 2015 . Ilg also received an EchoJazz in 2014 for Parsifal and in 2016 for BACH.
In 2018, after 7 years of collaboration as a duo, the first sound carrier by Till Brönner and Dieter Ilg was released: Nightfall (Sony / Okeh). This production received the Jazz Platinum Award in 2019.
Ilg has been a lecturer for jazz double bass at the Freiburg University of Music since 1995 , where he is mainly responsible for the general education of future school musicians.
meaning
Ilg is one of the jazz musicians from Germany who, according to the Jazz Rough Guide, also have an "enormous international reputation". In addition to the virtuoso technique, it is Ilg's “narrative” style of playing that impresses colleagues, critics and the audience alike.
