Peter Erskine (* 5. June 1954 in Somers Point , New Jersey) is an American jazz - drummer . He is considered one of the most versatile and busiest jazz drummers of the last few decades. He became known as a member of Weather Report , where he played from 1978 with interruptions until 1986.

Life

Erskine with Weather Report (1981)

Erskine began playing the drums at the age of four. After attending the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan , he studied percussion at Indiana University . He has been a professional musician since 1972. After three years with Stan Kenton's orchestra, he played with Maynard Ferguson for two years .

He became known to a wider public primarily through his work in the fusion group Weather Report (from 1978; heard on "Mr. Gone"), which he left after five years to play with the fusion band Steps Ahead .

Together with bassists like Jaco Pastorius , John Patitucci , Michael Formanek , Marc Johnson , Eddie Gomez , Dave Holland , Michel Benita , Palle Danielsson , Dave Carpenter and Buell Neidlinger , he formed an exemplary rhythm group .

Erskine has worked as a drummer in over 700 LP or CD productions. In addition to jazz, he has also worked with musicians from pop and rock . His playing is characterized by flawless craftsmanship and footwork, musicality and interactivity. Since the 1980s, Erskine has also recorded a number of albums as the leader of his own trio for the Munich label ECM, on which the pianist John Taylor and bassist Palle Danielsson participated.

Erskine has also made a name for himself as an author of textbooks and instructional videos. The DVD, "The Erskine Method for Drumset" (Alfred Publishing Co. Inc.) clearly documents his educational and musical talent. He also runs his own CD production, Fuzzy Music , with his wife Mutsuko . He used Yamaha drums until 2005 , then drum workshop equipment, and Tama drums since 2014 .

He has been voted best jazz drummer eight times by the readers of Modern Drummer magazine , that is, by drummers.
