Marc Johnson

Marc Johnson (* 21st October 1953 in Omaha , Nebraska ) is an American jazz - bassist , the last trio of pianist Bill Evans played.

Life

Johnson began playing bass at the age of 16 (before that he played piano and cello ) and studied at the University of North Texas ( Lyle Mays was a fellow student). In 1972 he played the double bass in the Fort Worth Symphony . In 1977 he toured with the Woody Herman Big Band. During a tour stop in New York in 1978, Bill Evans invited him to his last trio, which was then playing in the Village Vanguard and in which he played until the pianist's death in 1980. In 1982 he worked on Stan Getz 's Concord album Pure Getz .

In 1985 he began to record under his own name at ECM ( Bass Desires , with guitarists Bill Frisell and John Scofield and drummer Peter Erskine , with the same group Bass Desires also Second Sight 1987). With Arto Tunçboyacıyan and Ben Monder he attempted on Right Brain Patrol in 1991 to orchestrate in an original way and to transfer the bass drum function to the double bass.

He also worked closely with the guitarist John Abercrombie , in whose trio he was for a long time, Lyle Mays , the Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi and the Brazilian singer and pianist Eliane Elias (e.g. in their trio), his wife. He was also a member of Night Ark in the 1990s . Other prominent musicians he has performed with include Michael Brecker , Pat Metheny , Paul Motian , Lee Konitz , Charles Lloyd , Gary Burton , Jack DeJohnette and Dino Saluzzi .
