John Abercrombie / Marc Johnson / Peter Erskine is a jazz album by the trio composed of guitarist John Abercrombie , bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Peter Erskine . The trio's appearance, recorded on April 21, 1988 at Club Nightstage in Boston, was released in 1989 on ECM Records.

background

Abercrombie had already recorded the album Current Events with this trio in the Rainbow Studio in Oslo in 1985 . In the June 1989 issue of the French magazine Jazz Hot , he spoke of his desire to achieve a democratic balance with his trio constellation comparable to that of the famous Poll Winners trio by Barney Kessel , Ray Brown and Shelly Manne .

reception

Michael Tucker wrote in the Jazz Journal that the fast “Stella by Starlight” or the walking swing of “Beautiful Heart” would pale a bit compared to the refined groove of “Four On One”, its play with melodic freedom or the atmospheric combination of melodic Buoyancy and rhythmic anchorage in the rock-solid “Furs On Ice” and “Samurai Hee-Haw”. But while reminiscences of Terje Rypdal's synthetic moods of the late 1970s in Light Beam " further emphasize Abercrombie's distance to purist notions of linear bebop revival, the overall point of his comparative approach [with Barney Kessel] is well understood." This is a great trio -Recording, the author sums up, in which Johnson and Erskine deliver an inspiring palette of colors, kick and mood and which should satisfy all but the most fanatical purist boppers or fans of free forms.

Ron Wynn gave the album 4½ (out of 5) stars in Allmusic and praised it: “An excellent trio outing with Abercrombie, the inventive bassist Marc Johnson and the career drummer Peter Erskine. The trio sometimes unites in piercing interpretations like 'Stella by Starlight', and sometimes it collides and interacts with angry rhythmic dialogues and extended improvisations. "

Richard Cook and Brian Morton ( The Penguin Guide to Jazz ) thought the album was a strong statement, even if it didn't have the stringency of Current Event (1985); the inclusion of the two standards "Stella by Starlight" and "Beautiful Love" was a good decision.
